Barely a week after people in Nkhatabay stood their grounds and
pledged total support to President Banda and her ruling People’s Party,
traditional leaders and people in Rumphi have followed suit and
unanimously endorsed President Banda as their favorite presidential
candidate in the forthcoming presidential elections.
The people and their leaders in the district say President Banda has a heart for them, and that they will, in return, support her and her endeavours.
Their stance could also be irrefutably seen when President Banda was addressing a development rally at Bolero Primary School ground in the district yesterday.
President Banda commanded a mammoth crowd of tens thousands who came to patronize the rally.
President Banda also promoted Traditional Authority (TA) Katumbi of Rumphi to become the district’s second Senior Chief.
Katumbi is one of the very first two traditional leaders to settle in Rumphi in the early 16th Century together with Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe.
The newly elevated chief did not hide any words: “I am thankful to Madam Joyce Banda for the kindness she has shown to this district; we the chiefs of Rumphi will never forget her. And I wish to say it categorically that we are in support of her and her government.”
Vincent Gondwe of the district also said: “We will rally behind her. All we want is a president who does not sidelines us in development projects and Joyce Banda has proven to be the one. We don’t want to be experimenting.”
Gondwe said a little more leaders only need people’s votes but that they quickly forget them when they are in power.
